INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY 2015 AT CHUPI
MARCH 08, 2015 by CHUPI SWEETMAN
Today is international Women’s Day, it is sometimes easy to forget in the heady buzz of equality what feminism actually means, here at Chupi we wanted to celebrate all of the amazing things achieved by and for women.
The quote above from Eleanor Roosevelt, “Well behaved women rarely make history” is incredibly true, especially in Ireland.
Not so long ago the position of women in Ireland was second class to say the very least! In Ireland contraception was illegal (until 1980), rape was legal within marriage (until 1990), a women would have to give up her job on marrying (until 1977), a woman could be refused a pint in a pub (only made illegal in 2002). My mum Rosita Sweetman is one of the founding members of the Irish feminist movement and I am incredibly proud of everything they achieved, we must not forget that feminism is a wonderful and powerful thing, not that women are greater than men but that we are equal and different.
For 2015 go be behave badly and make some history!
PS don’t forget to give the wonderful ladies in your life some love today, they have earned it.
