Meet the latest couple in The Chupi Engagement Series: Katie and Dave. Katie tells us about their gorgeous proposal the night before they left for a holiday to Brooklyn last summer with her amazing black diamond engagement ring.

Dave & I met when we were 17. That was ten years ago now and it simultaneously feels like an eternity and a second since I’ve known him. Not all teenage loves survive through time, but we knew ours would.

We were heading to Brooklyn for our summer holiday. Our cases were packed all ready for our adventure and we were both so excited. I had gone to the hairdresser straight after work the day before we left and thought that when I got home we would grab a casual dinner and finish packing ahead of our big trip.

As soon as I walked in the door from the hairdressers, he called me into the living room of the flat we had been living in for 6 months; our first place together, and a space that feels so ‘us’. He told me he had got me a gift and he handed me a huge box. As I took off the wrapping and saw ‘Chupi’ written on the box, my heart sank.

Right there in our living room, of our very first home, the night before our trip to Brooklyn, he asked me the question I’d waited so long for. It was perfect, and so intimate, so subtle and so well planned. So us.

I assumed he had known I was waiting for a proposal, and that I had my heart set on New York, but that he had gotten be a pair of earrings, or maybe a necklace to soften the blow that it wasn’t going to happen…not this holiday anyway. I tried to mask my disappointment as I unwrapped the tissue paper until I found myself holding the tiny pink velvet ring box. He asked me if I knew what was happening. I didn’t.

I’ve followed the Chupi Instagram for years. I adored the twig band and would bookmark rings or send them to Dave in admiration. I wouldn’t have cared what ring I got, I just knew I needed that twig band. He chose the black diamond himself. He says he can’t imagine any other girl who can pull it off like I do. It’s different and unique, it stands out and he says I do too.

When I look at my You Me and Magic Black Diamond ring I think about his boldness and his certainty of me. He chose something outside the norm for me and I think that was brave – I know he thought a lot about it. I feel so lucky to have this ring, it feels like it was designed especially for me.

We don’t have any wedding plans yet, we aren’t big planners. We are returning to Brooklyn this summer to celebrate our 1 year engagement anniversary.
