Sapphire is an amazing choice for your heirloom ring, they have such an incredible sparkle and is almost as strong as a diamond. Ranking at 9 on the MOHS scale, Blue Sapphire is an incredible and durable stone.

Blue Sapphire is the most popular and sought after type of Sapphire. Sapphire exists in a rainbow of colours including pink, yellow, green and grey, but the inky-blue variety is the best known. This precious stone is September’s birthstone and the traditional wedding anniversary gift for the 5th and 45th year of marriage.

What is Sapphire?

Sapphire is a precious gemstone that comes from the corundum mineral which is a crystallised form of aluminium oxide. Corundum forms in crystalline rocks, which contain what we know as sapphires or rubies, based on other minerals present during formation.

This mix of minerals work together over thousands of years, resulting in beautiful and rare gemstones like Sapphire. Sapphire is an extremely durable stone and doesn’t scratch easily. They rank at 9 on the MOHs scale of hardness, second only to diamond.

The name sapphire comes from the Greek word “sapphirus”, meaning “blue”. Sapphires have long been the prized possessions of emperors, kings and queens for thousands of years, making it the most in demand coloured gemstone.

The meaning behind Blue Sapphire

Sapphire was once thought to guard against evil and poisoning. Traditionally a favourite stone of priests and kings, the sparkling Sapphire symbolises purity and wisdom. The Sapphire stone is forever associated with sacred things and considered the gem of all gems. They are said to bring luck, loyalty and happiness in love, making it the perfect stone in an engagement ring.

To the ancient and medieval world, Sapphire signified the height of celestial hope and faith, and was believed to bring protection, good fortune and spiritual insight. They are said to bring luck, loyalty and happiness in love.
