Meet the latest couple in The Chupi Engagement Series: Kate & Seán. Kate tells us about her gorgeous engagement with the You Me & Magic Grey diamond ring in St. Stephen’s Green, Dublin.

After spending the last 4 months in a 1 bedroom apartment on Bachelor’s Walk our lease came to an end this week. With both of us working remotely for the foreseeable future, after 10 years of renting in Dublin we decided it was time to move back home to Clare. We went to school together so Clare home for both of us and after getting through the last few months all we wanted was to be near our friends and family from home.

We had moved out most of our stuff the weekend before but had left a few big things like the TV until this weekend. We were eager to come up and get the last of our things and get back to Clare as we had plans with friends that evening not having seen anyone since the beginning of lockdown.

Once we had everything packed I was eager to get on the road but Seán said he had reserved something in Argos and we needed to pick it up. I was a bit baffled by this as we could have just gone to Argos any time back home but I said “okay fine, let’s go quickly and then come back”. Then when he told me he had reserved it at the Argos in Stephens Green I was a little annoyed!

Having been together since we were teenagers, marriage had ended up being something we said we would do someday or after we got a mortgage, so believe it or not I was a bit in shock!

I couldn’t figure out why he hadn’t reserved it on the North side of the city at least to save us a walk, but he said it was out of stock so we set off, donning our facemasks, to walk across town. As we were walking down Grafton street, busier than we had seen it in months, we passed that little jewellery shop lane that I have always loved. Seán asked if I wanted to take one last look before we left the city. I said of course I did, and we wandered down to have a look, happy to see the shops open again. When we were in front of one of the little windows, out of the blue he asked if I wanted to pick one!

Having been together since we were teenagers, marriage had ended up being something we said we would do someday or after we got a mortgage, so believe it or not I was a bit in shock! I asked if he was serious and he said he had always known he wanted to marry me but he had been planning to do it on this day since the first few weeks of lockdown, as we had made it through it together, working day in day out in that tiny apartment. And he said as we were leaving Dublin (at least for a while) to start the next chapter of our lives, it was a bit symbolic and the timing felt right.

Seán said he had always known he wanted to marry me but he had been planning to do it on this day since the first few weeks of lockdown, as we had made it through it together, working day in day out in that tiny apartment.

I said yes of course and after I had calmed down a bit we headed into one of the shops to try on some rings. We tried a few but nothing seemed right, they were all the wrong shape, wrong size or too fussy and the lady assisting us said every single one was beautiful on me so it was difficult to believe her.

Feeling a bit disappointed, Seán suggested we try Chupi as he knew I spent a good portion of time browsing the website online. I said I would love that but that I would be surprised if it was open or if you might need an appointment. We decided to go check it out anyway.

Walking into Powerscourt we passed by numerous jewellery shops and had a good look at all the rings in the window but nothing was quite right. Eventually we made our way to the top floor, following the social distancing arrows, we found the Chupi’s Store! I was so excited as soon as I recognised the rose pink interior I knew from being a long time fan online.
We were the only customers there at the time and a very friendly sales assistant (also called Kate!) came over to us shortly after we walked in. We said we were here to have a look at some of the engagement rings and that I loved the grey diamond ones.

Having almost immediately found one I liked, the Grey Diamond & Classic Diamond Engagement Ring – One Carat – You Me & Magic – in Solid Gold,  she kindly took it out for us and I fitted it on. It fit perfectly and the size of the stone looked perfect for my hand.

Kate showed us a few other variations of the ring, explaining that no two greys were alike. This was even more fun! I loved them all, they all fit but one stood out to us both, a smoker, darker grey, that I thought looked really unique and just felt like me! We both also loved that it was cast from a real Hawthorn twig . We looked at each other, and though we were wearing face masks I am sure you could tell I was smiling ear to ear!

“This is my ring” I said to Seán. So we got it there and then! Kate was very friendly and helpful to us and being the only ones in the shop, we felt like it was our own little private appointment! Afterwards we made our way to Stephens Green, found a quiet area and Seán got down on one knee and proposed to me “properly”. There were tears and a few quick kisses. It was such a perfect way to symbolise the end of the past few months and begin the next chapter of our lives together. When I look at my beautiful ring I feel so excited for what the future will bring! I have been on cloud nine ever since.

Thank you to the team at Chupi for making us feel special and helping us find our dream ring ! We will definitely be back for our wedding bands!
