Lab Grown Diamond Engagement Rings FAQs

Choosing an engagement ring is deeply personal, and we know there are lots of questions along the way. Below, you’ll find answers to some of the most common questions about Chupi engagement rings, from sizing and diamonds to custom design, timelines, and care. Every ring is handcrafted in Ireland using recycled gold and ethically sourced stones, designed to become a future heirloom.

Engagement Ring Questions

How much should I spend on an engagement ring?

Traditionally, it’s suggested we should spend three month's salary on an engagement ring. Here at Chupi, we believe you should only spend what feels right for you and your partner. The average price paid for an engagement ring in Ireland is €3,800. Ultimately, your engagement ring is a personal statement of your love and commitment to each other. Our best advice is to set your budget and trust your heart; the perfect engagement ring will be a reflection of your unique story so will feel priceless, regardless of the price tag.

What metal should an engagement ring be made of?

Choosing the metal for an engagement ring is a deeply personal decision, so the true answer to this question is that your engagement and wedding rings should be made of the metal you most like to wear. If you don’t regularly wear any jewellery or have no preference to metals then the next question is what is your daily lifestyle like. Some metals are stronger than others so it is important to know how ‘hard’ you are going to be on your rings.

The next thing to consider is the lifetime service needs of your piece. All metals require some care and maintenance but some will need regular upkeep to maintain their colour or polish. Some softer metals such as silver are not suitable for lifetime wear as they can wear down over time, and others such as titanium are so hard they cannot be resized.

Popular choices for engagement rings include the warm, classic glow of yellow gold or the modern sophistication of white gold or platinum which is a wonderful option, celebrated for its durability and rarity. Each metal has its own charm, and all will require maintenance and servicing over your lifetime, so consider what aligns best with you and your partner's preferences and lifestyle when selecting the best metal for your engagement ring and wedding band.

How do I find out my partner's ring size?

Finding your partner's ring size can feel like a bit of a magical quest. The biggest thing to remember is that engagement ring size is not the same as a dress size! Rings are measured in quarter millimetre increments and confusingly, sizes can be indicated by either letters or numbers. Quite often the size measured by one goldsmith can be different to another as the tools used to make the ring can come from different manufacturers. So we advise you first choose the jeweller you want to make your ring and then work on selecting the right size with their guidance. If you are working towards a Cinderella moment and hoping for a perfect fit, one lovely way to determine a size fit is to borrow a ring they wear on their ring finger (The ring finger is the one beside the pinky!) If she doesn’t wear rings on this finger, enlisting the help of friends or a family member can be useful. For an even more secretive approach, we advise you to select a larger size to make sure that the ring will definitely fit on the finger when the big moment comes.

At Chupi we offer complimentary resizing for any engagement ring as a part of your purchase. We also offer a handy solution at ringsizer.chupi.com that guides you through finding the best fit right from the comfort of home. Whether you’re borrowing a ring or using our app, ensuring the engagement ring size is just right will add a little extra sparkle to your special moment.

What are the 4 Cs of diamonds?

The Colour, Clarity, Cut and Carat are the 4 Cs of diamonds. Understanding how these four important characteristics of a diamond interplay to affect its beauty, rarity and value will help you make an educated decision ensuring your engagement ring is as valuable as it is meaningful.

Read our guide on the 4 Cs of Diamonds.

What is the difference between natural and lab-grown diamonds?

At Chupi, we believe every diamond tells a story, whether it's born in the earth or crafted in a lab. Natural diamonds, formed over billions of years, carry a legacy of timeless beauty, each one unique in its journey from deep within the earth to your hand. Lab-grown diamonds, on the other hand, are created using advanced technology that replicates the natural diamond-growing process, producing diamonds that are identical to their natural counterparts in every way.

It is not possible to tell the difference between natural and lab grown diamonds unless the natural diamond fluoresces (and not all do). So for the majority of diamonds, the only difference lies in their origin: natural diamonds are a wonder of nature, while lab-grown diamonds are a marvel of human ingenuity. Both are beautiful choices for engagement rings, so whether you lean towards the ancient allure of a natural diamond or the innovative charm of a lab-grown diamond, know that you’re choosing a diamond as special as your love.

At Chupi our lab grown diamonds are sourced from carbon neutral suppliers to deliver the most sustainable engagement ring option. For natural mined diamonds, we only source from diamonds certified as conflict free for our engagement rings, ensuring peace of mind and the highest ethical credentials.

What diamond shape should I choose?

Choosing the perfect diamond shape is all about capturing the essence of your partner's unique style and personality. At Chupi, we adore the variety each shape brings to engagement rings. The classic Round Brilliant cut is cherished for its timeless sparkle and brilliance, making it a perennial favourite. If your love leans towards something more contemporary and chic, the Princess or Emerald cut, with its sharp, geometric lines, might be the perfect choice.

For those drawn to vintage charm, the Cushion or Radiant cuts offer a romantic appeal. The Oval and Marquise cuts, with their elongated shapes, can have more presence on the hand while still creating a touch of elegant sophistication. Ultimately, the best shape for an engagement ring is one that resonates with your partner’s personal style and the story you wish to tell together.

Should I buy a matching wedding band at the same time?

Deciding to buy a matching wedding band at the same time as your engagement ring is a delightful idea and we would highly recommend at least considering what type of wedding band you would like when selecting your engagement ring as these two rings will most likely be worn together and should look and feel like they were made for each other.

The benefit of purchasing your wedding bands while buying your engagement ring is that it ensures both pieces complement each other perfectly, and it simplifies the process, making it more seamless and less stressful as you enter into all the preparations that come with planning a wedding day. However, some couples prefer choosing their wedding bands later, reflecting new chapters of their journey together.

At Chupi, we offer beautiful collections of wedding bands and wedding rings that can be matched with your engagement ring, allowing you to create a harmonious suite of jewellery that tells your unique love story. Whatever your choice, we’re here to help you find the perfect engagement ring and wedding band that resonate with your love and commitment.

Should I choose a promise ring?

If you're feeling unsure about what style, metal, size or stone to choose for your engagement ring, or if you know that she would love to be a part of choosing her engagement ring - a promise ring can be a beautiful and meaningful choice.

At Chupi, we believe that every step of your love story is precious, and a promise ring is a wonderful way to signify your commitment and love while still leaving room for experiencing all the excitement and joy that can come from selecting the perfect engagement ring together. It's a heartfelt token that represents a promise for the future, whether that’s leading to an engagement or simply celebrating your commitment to each other.

Promise rings are versatile, coming in a variety of stunning designs that can be as simple or elaborate as you desire. They’re perfect for those special moments when you want to express your dedication without the immediacy of an engagement. Plus, they hold a sentimental value that beautifully complements your journey together. If you're not quite ready for an engagement ring, a promise ring from Chupi can be a cherished symbol of your love and intention.

Lab Diamond Questions

Are Lab Diamonds Real

Yes. Lab-grown diamonds are visually, chemically and molecularly identical to mined diamonds, the only difference is that they're grown above ground using technology that replicates the natural diamond-forming process, rather than being mined from the earth. All our lab-grown diamonds are certified to international standards on cut, colour, clarity and carat weight. Read more on our Sustainability page.

Can you tell the difference between a lab-grown and natural diamond?

No, not to the naked eye or even under most jewellers' loupes, since lab-grown diamonds share the same optical and physical properties as mined diamonds. The only reliable way to distinguish them is specialist equipment that detects trace growth patterns, and even then it's a lab-only test, not something visible in day-to-day wear. Whichever you choose, you're getting a genuine diamond.

Why are lab-grown diamonds cheaper than natural diamonds?

Generally, lab-grown diamonds typically cost less than natural diamonds of comparable cut, colour, clarity and carat, since they avoid the cost and complexity of mining. This means you can often choose a larger or higher-quality stone for the same budget. Browse our Natural Diamond Engagement Rings to compare.

Are lab-grown diamonds more sustainable than mined diamonds?

Yes. All our lab-grown diamonds are fully traceable and carbon-neutral, avoiding the environmental and social impact associated with unregulated mining. As a Certified B Corp, this is part of our wider commitment to reducing the demand for newly mined stones wherever possible. Full details are on our Certified B Corp page.

Questions About Chupi

Who designs Chupi Engagement Rings?

Every Chupi engagement ring is designed by our founder, Chupi Sweetman, working in recycled solid gold, precious stones and consciously sourced diamonds and carbon neutral lab diamonds. For bespoke pieces, our master goldsmiths guide you through a collaborative design process from first consultation to final setting. Learn more on our About Us page.

What does Certified B Corp mean for my ring?

Chupi is Ireland's only Certified B Corp jeweller, scoring 126.3 against a certification threshold of 80, meaning our entire business has been independently verified on ethical sourcing, environmental impact, workers, and community standards, not just self-declared. For your ring specifically, this underpins our use of recycled solid gold, recycled or carbon-neutral lab-grown diamonds, and production within 100km of our Dublin HQ. Read more on our Certified B Corp page.

Are Chupi diamonds ethically sourced?

Yes. Over 80% of the classic diamonds in our collections are recycled, and all our lab-grown diamonds are fully traceable and carbon-neutral. Any newly mined diamonds we use are certified through the Kimberley Process to confirm they aren't funding conflict. Full details are on our Sustainability page.

How long does it take to make a Chupi engagement ring?

Timelines vary depending on the piece and whether it's from our existing collections or fully bespoke, as custom rings go through consultation, CAD design, traditional lost-wax casting, and hallmarking at Dublin Castle before hand-finishing. For a specific timeframe for your ring, it's best to check with our team via Book an Appointment or Customer Care.

Can I design my own engagement ring with Chupi?

Yes. Our custom engagement ring service starts with a consultation in our Dublin studio or online, where you choose your diamonds and style, followed by design and craft using CAD and traditional lost-wax casting, and finishing with hallmarking at Dublin Castle. You can also rework heirloom gold or a diamond with personal meaning into your new piece. See our Custom Engagement Rings page for the full process.

Where are Chupi engagement rings made?

Every Chupi engagement ring is handcrafted in Ireland by our team of master goldsmiths with a combined 100 years of experience. Custom pieces are hallmarked at Dublin Castle, guaranteeing the purity of the precious metal. Read more about our process on the Custom Engagement Rings page.

Returns, Exchanges & Resizing

Can I resize an engagement ring?

Yes, we offer one complimentary first resize on engagement and wedding rings within two years of delivery, arranged by emailing care@chupi.com. Resizing by more than 1.5 sizes may mean the ring needs to be remade, and we recommend no more than three resizes over a ring's lifetime to protect its structural integrity. Note that eternity rings are never resized but completely remade instead. More detail is in our Request a Resize article.

Can I exchange an engagement ring?

Yes, exchanges are available within 30 days of delivery, whether online through your account, in store, or by emailing our Customer Care team. Availability determines whether the new piece can be sent immediately or needs to be pre-ordered. As with refunds, engraved, personalised, or bespoke-metal pieces are final sale and don't qualify. Full steps are in our Return for Exchange article.

Can I return an engagement ring?

Yes, you can return your engagement ring for a full refund within 30 days of delivery, either through your account online or in person at our store. Refunds go back to the original payment method and are processed within 10-14 working days of the piece reaching us. Rings that are engraved, personalised, or made to order in bespoke metals like 18K gold or platinum are final sale and not eligible. See our Return for Refund article for full details.
